Big Rigs Plus

Sunshine Christian School hosted a Big Rigs Plus, an event that invited area businesses and services to bring their "Big Rigs" and show them to kids while explaining what they do for our community.  The event was held Friday, August 19 at the school.  Fifteen businesses along with four services and 6 education fund raising booths participated.

The Alamosa Police Department brought four vehicles including a cruiser, SWAT armored vehicle, Crime Scene Investigation van, and Animal Control truck.  The Alamosa Ambulance brought their vehicle, and the Alamosa Fire Department brought their Type 1 truck. Sand Dunes National Park brought their Ranger Truck.  Southway Construction brought a mixer truck and a large gravel truck.  VanIwaarden Builders brought a platform fork lift, Mr. Mateo brought his potato truck, Starlight trucking provided a semi and trailer, John Deer showed a new tractor, and Asphalt construction brought a road grater. The Bridge Assisted Living showed their transport van and Joel Fleming displayed his GT Roadster. Finally the Rio Grande Railroad brought their truck with a generator that allows kids to blow a genuine train horn.  Very loud and very cool.

Services were represented as well.  MOPS, Foster Care Alliance, SLV Prevention Coalition, and Community Gardens set up booths with interactive activities for kids.  Sunshine Christian School and Parent Scholarship Fund sold baked goods, snow cones, animal balloons,  and did face painting  while Pathfinders/Campion Tuition sold delicious Taco Dinners.

Fun was from 10am to 2pm giving attendees time to sit in vehicles, honk horns and run sirens, ride the fork lift or wheelchair lift while Jim Moon sang and played songs especially written or picked for this program. There was a sign up booth to win toy "Big Rigs" and Big Rig Hats donated by Big R, Starlight Trucking, SLV Prevention Coalition, and Sports Print Plus. A steady stream of Big Rig lovers including PALS kids enjoyed the day and are looking forward to doing it again next year with even more Big Rigs.

Butterfly's and Boys

I took my daughter and her boys to the Butterfly Pavilion in Broomfield Colorado last week. It is located right of HWY 36. Take the Church Ranch exit and follow the signs. It's really easy to get to. Their website will give you prices, which are very reasonable, and activities to do with family.
It's a great place for kids because there are hands-on activities. Lots to keep the little mind and body busy. I also doesn't take that long to go through. You can do it in an hour, but I like staying longer to enjoy the butterflies. There was a guy there with a camera that said he had been there since it opened and they were about to close when I met him. The picture opportunities are awesome so I took quite a few.
